Methodology
Situation / Focus
Expected Results
Problem, waste, or opportunity exists. Root cause(s) are suspected or known. Low-risk solutions may be available. All stakeholders can get together to decide on solutions.
Find and gain agreement to low-risk solutions to the problem.
Build or rebuild a process. Customer needs are internal or well-known. Low-risk designs may be available. All stakeholders can get together to decide.
Rapidly create a new “capable” process.
Tightly-scoped, low risk waste or inefficiency problem in an existing process. Willing/able to assess the whole process. Willing to consider “radical” change.
Rapidly achieve results with low risks (streamline, cut costs, reduce cycle time or rework).
Significant problem or gap in performance in an existing process. Root cause(s) are unknown/unsure . “Band-aids” are unacceptable. Customer needs and requirements unclear.
Reduce defects, cut rework, accelerate cycle time, manage costs, improve customer satisfaction.
Build new or rebuild entire process or product. Process or product is new (does not exist); or the problem is so bad that the old process needs to be discarded.
Major leap in performance, capability & flexibility.
The structure of the organization must change, combine, or integrate with another. All stakeholders can get together to decide on the new structure.
Create a new “capable” organization, focusing first on the critical work and last on who does it, to maximize its efficiency & effectiveness.
